Patrons locked inside of a bar are forced to fight monsters.
How skimpy is that synopsis? Yet it's entirely accurate. Add to it the fact that all patrons are only known by nicknames told to the audience by freeze frame flash cards. Oh and the fact that in no way do you ever EVER know just what the fuck the monsters actually are. The trailers use a bunch of stock footage to make you believe they are some government biological weapon but its never brought up in the film. Atleast not in the cut I saw. Perhaps there are deleted scenes when the DVD comes out that will explain them. I, for one, felt it worked perfectly. Like you're going to be in a bar attacked by space mutant zombie robot pig monkeys and some dude just happens to be slamming back jack daniels tells you whats up? Not fucking likely.
When I first started watching the third season of Project Greenlight I was excited to see a horror film but as the season went on I realised... I hate reality TV. Not like Cops or something like that but a show that cuts, edits, rewrites, and lies, basically, to tell a "better" story. They tried to make John Gulager look like an incompetent retard. But whatever...
Although Gulager has some interesting shots and does a good job of composition being the writer of the RCFF I have to give major props to Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton. Their script is obviously the backbone of the film. The fact that you DON'T KNOW WHO WILL DIE EVER is awesome! Or the real human motivation of some of the characters to save their own skin is well thought out. I can see this film becoming a cult classic because:
1) It's got the gore, great sense of humor, and twists to make it rewatchable.
2) It sure as shit isn't going to break the bank at the theatres.
I see it moving about like Boondock Saints.
As for the negatives on this film... I'd say not much beyond a few cheap effects or cheap coverups for effects. Also this film like so many other recent films has that crazy handheld whip the camera around like a drunken idiot fight scenes. The effects when shown are good enough not to require that crazy camera work. Worst thing about the film was the terrible baby monster puppet. Oddly enough one of the few effects that wasn't hidden in the shadows properly.
Proof you got a good script when this line shows up; "Monster cock caught in the door!"
That's pure gold people! Definitely pick this up or rent it when it comes out on DVD in, I believe, two or three weeks.
